Artist statement

Sandris Masins

I am a contemporary artist. I work with various media and practice many forms of art. I can work traditionally, and I can be very modern. What describes me the best, though, would be – Mixed media artist. I practice painting and work with acrylics, oils and watercolours and ink. I practise pencil drawing, coloured, black and white and grey washes. My work is often figurative. I focus on portraiture and animal drawings. I work in several styles, like photo-realism and caricatures. I practise calligraphy, and often in my work, I will mix different media and techniques to create new effects. I can be very resourceful when it comes to creating new paint media or alternative materials as a canvas. I also practise graffiti, sculpturing, printmaking, engraving, woodwork, drywall art, airbrushing and tattooing, to name a few.  I work on different scale pieces, from very small and detailed to large, where the largest to this date is graffiti approx. 21m².

I feel in no way limited in my media or styles. I change with the seasons, and I don’t accept rules in art. I remain non-exclusive regarding what I do today and what I will be doing tomorrow. A lot of my work will be either photo/ hyperrealism or abstract and surreal. Very often, my theme is about nature, pollution and irony.

Lately, I enjoy exploring materiality, the process of making and ways to elevate my craftmanship. I can work with wood, metal, glass, ceramics, upcycling, or anything I can get my hands on. What I will be working with will depend on my project and idea.

My work isn’t always physical, I work with digital media and web design. I create logos, archetypes and digital artwork. I work on many ideas, and sometimes, my work is solely conceptual.

I work and collaborate with many other artists and designers, and I want to stay part of art society, and I want to contribute to society as a whole.

I often use special equipment and constantly explore new technical advancements in my work, like the use of CO₂ lasers, 3d printing, CNC routers and sublimation printing and more. The advancement of our technological capability and AI is a great inspiration and driving force for me. I am very adaptive, and I welcome change.
